Guts and Glow: Voxel Damage & Broadside AI
We watch exposed decks, ribs, and dark interior structural wounds take shape, tune laser carving, and face orbiting broadside enemies.

Developer Log
- Visual Wreckage Target: Armor plates now peel away to reveal underlying structural decks, ribs, broken pipes, and dark interior shadows, avoiding simple "missing polygon" render bugs.
- Tuned Beam Carving: Beam damage was vaporizing ship hulls too quickly. We tuned lasers to punch direct holes while melting and scoring adjacent plates with dynamic heat glows.
- Orbiting Broadside AI: Hostile warships now compute dynamic intercept courses, maneuvering to keep the player tracked within their broadside firing arcs.
Visual Changelog
Orbit broadside combat initialization: the player immediately engages a maneuvering adversary.
Translucent debug voxel overlay showing structural boundaries and laser trace sweeps.
Tuned laser carving at tick 245. Beams scar and melt the hull, creating dynamic thermal edges.
Orbiting AI executing a strafing run, leaving a progressive trail of vaporized voxels, sparks, and heat bloom.
AI pilot establishing its orbit vector, calculating relative axes to maintain weapon alignment.
Deep hull breach showing structural ribs and deck plating beneath outer armor.
Front-breach interior showing procedural dark caps, pipes, and cables created by the generator.
Wreckage slice overview: structural ribs and decks merge to form a physicalized debris scar with AO shading.
Retrospective
- Feel vs. Physics: Core-rooted topology splits ships perfectly, but vaporizing voxel chunks instantly made combat feel too brief. Carving scars and splash damage preserves visual wreckage detail before ships snap.
- Visual Verification Guard: Git pre-push hooks verify builds and LFS assets, blocking modifications to render code unless accompanied by matching screenshot evidence.
“Add capital ship damage wounds, shear hull armor, expose deck plating and pipes. Make broadside AI orbit.”
Wound cap meshes aggregated by face axis. Triangles culled from damaged voxels. AI orbit steer verified in live combat simulation.
